Two killed, six injured in Florida State University shooting. Suspect in custody as police investigate motive. Campus on lockdown.

FSU Tragic Shooting Updates

A devastating shooting at Florida State University in Tallahassee left two people dead and six others injured on Thursday, April 17, 2025. The incident occurred near the student union around 11:50 a.m., prompting an immediate lockdown of the campus.

Authorities identified the suspect as 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner, a current FSU student and son of a Leon County sheriff’s deputy. Ikner was shot by police, apprehended, and hospitalized. Police confirmed he acted alone, using a handgun previously owned by his mother, a former deputy. The motive remains under investigation.

Campus Response and Victim Details

The university canceled classes through Friday and all athletic events through the weekend. Nine buildings, including the student union, remain closed as active crime scenes. The two deceased victims were not FSU students, though their identities have not been released. Six injured victims were treated at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare, with surgeries reported as successful.

The shooting has deeply affected the FSU community, with students and faculty sheltering in place during the incident. Survivors of the 2018 Parkland shooting, now at FSU, expressed renewed trauma. President Donald Trump and other officials have been briefed, with calls for prayers and support for the victims’ families.
